Television programmes watched

Recently I watched a programme called 'The ones to Watch' (I Think that was the title) where four people were chosen by industry leaders to be mentored by them for two weeks and then introduced to the industry.

Rankin was the photographer and as someone's work I admire I was interested to see how he would come across as a Mentor, especially bearing in mind his own attitude for want of a better expression at times.

He chose an 18 year old boy from Ireland, as he admired the passion in his work. Rankin showed him how to use studio lighting as he normally uses natural light, he was then tasked with a commercial shoot and needed to produce something different.  Rankin left him to it and called in to see him later on during the shoot to see how he was getting on.  He looked at the young lads work and told him he thought he should re do it as he wasn't happy with it.  Rankin then went on to say he had been given an easy ride and needed the reality check in a way.

The final project was to hold his own exhibition something that he would have to plan, shoot and arrange the photographs himself.  He chose to do men's street style using ordinary men that he thought looked a bit different.  Rankin admitted he was unsure if it would work and although several men had their photographs taken Rankin did have some models on standby too.

The final exhibition and viewing went really well and the lad made several contacts within the industry and also got a couple of advertising shoots.

A very interesting programme.
