I had the opportunity to attend one of the trade shows to do with SWPP. included in the free ticket was the chance to attend some seminars. I chose to attend one by Damien Lovegrove on advanced Portrait lighting. This was probably one of the best hours I have spent in a long time, the talk was witty, informative and very inspiring. Damien showed a total of 80 images and explained how each image was lit not only in terms of the equipment he used but also the positioning on the equipment and why it was used that way.
He also explained how sometimes you can place a light in a different room, for example maybe a bathroom/en suite if the door opens into the bedroom and you are doing a boudoir shoot and space for lights is very limited. He also explained about soft light and how by using a soft box you can get the skin really smooth but in fact it can make the person look wider as there is no definition. Sometimes it is better to use a beauty dish which will help with the definition.
Damien also said he is happy for people to use his photography and has said that once he has been paid for the image he is happy is people want to download an image and keep it in a folder for inspiration. I had a couple of seconds to chat with him and explained that I am doing this course and was it ok to include a couple of images and he confirmed to me that it was.
I left the hall after the hour totally mesmerised by some of the imagery.
